Developing and implementing strategies in the oil and gas sector

Impactt has been working with an oil and gas major since 2018, supporting their senior and functional teams in developing, implementing, and measuring the effectiveness of their human rights strategy.

This approach combines blue sky, ambitious thinking, and granular detail captured during fieldwork undertaken for the client. This has allowed the team to formulate a relevant, ambitious, and effective strategy for addressing human rights within the supply chain that supports business continuity and growth throughout the value chain.

Strategic support has covered areas such as risk prioritisation based on issues affecting workers, internal culture change and awareness raising, upskilling and development of key staff, as well as a specific focus on how the remedy can be embedded within existing processes related to financial and non-financial contingencies included within contracts, tenders, and associated budgets. To date, this has allowed the client to accelerate the integration of human rights into everyday business practices, their energy transition aims, and the broader corporate strategy.

  • Completion of over 50 human rights assessments in 15 countries on four continents.
  • Training over 60 staff via a 5-module training programme on embedding human rights into day-to-day practices.
  • In-depth modern slavery investigations provide best practices regarding proper remedies for workers and the publication of forced labour data.
  • Training on identifying and possibly remediating forced labour indicators for staff operating in high-risk environments.
  • Continuous senior engagement on how to meet the ambition of the human rights strategy.
  • Developing supplier risk protocols and advice on prioritisation of efforts.
