Psychological factors have a powerful effect on human behaviour. In supply chains, poor job quality often stems from disempowerment – where workers accept poor treatment because they see it as the norm – and dehumanisation – where management see workers as ‘production units’ rather than people, and therefore see no value in promoting respect and equal rights in the workplace. The net effect can be high labour turnover and low productivity. To respond to these challenges and help empower managers, supervisors and workers, we developed RESTART training, a social psychology training programme that focuses on helping people to understand each other’s perspectives and build their self-confidence.
What we do
Through RESTART, we have helped fast-paced production sites (including in the UK and Romania) to build respect and understanding between supervisors and workers. We have also incorporated proven social psychology techniques into our flagship productivity training programme, Benefits for Business and Workers (BBW). Since brief, targeted, sessions have been proven to make a big impact on participants’ perceptions, we deliver two 90-minute RESTART sessions, using techniques such as interactive storytelling and role play to help ‘re-humanise’ the workforce. We also encourage people to listen to different perspectives, drawing on shared life experiences, and commit to making behavioural and attitude changes. At the heart of this, we explore why people act in certain ways, and uncover the root causes of workplace challenges.
Results and business benefits
- Food industry – Workers responded well to discussing workplace issues openly, and identified constructive ways to make changes. Managers built a better understanding of workers’ perspectives. In Romania, managers collaborated with workers to agree practical health and safety changes on site and empowered workers to voice concerns on an ongoing basis.
- Benefits for Business and Workers – Changing mindsets among participating BBW factories in India, Bangladesh and Myanmar has helped to increase efficiency by up to 26% and reduce labour turnover by as much as 52%. In Bangladesh, worker satisfaction increased by 32%, as workers developed a greater sense of self-esteem and pride in their work.
